Abstract

Description

A large amount of research has shown that immigrants in the Swedish labour market have higher unemployment and lower wages than natives with comparable characteristics, such as age and education, but the reasons for this are still not completely explained. The purpose of this project is to study the importance of social contacts for establishment in the labour market for young persons with immigrant background. Studies of neighbourhood effects, school effects, ethnic networks, and other kinds of social contacts have shown that social environments and networks influence establishment and career in the labour market in different ways and, hence, may explain why newly arrived immigrants frequently face difficulty in becoming established in the labour market. The uniqueness of this project lies in its analysis of the comparative importance of different kinds of social relations. Several types of social contexts are studied and put in contrast to each other; neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces, as well as national and transnational ethnic networks. Through access to two extensive register-based datasets, in combination with a unique survey, we will be able to analyse the relative importance of social contacts on different levels, and compare with the importance of formal competence and the situation in the labour market. The project combines economic theories on the relevance of human capital and labour demand with sociological theories on the importance of social networks in the labour market. Hence, the project takes into account both the characteristics of the individual and the opportunities and constraints of the context.
