The collaborative project focused on changing strategies of trade unions and other civil society organisations in Turkey, South Africa and Sweden, facing irregular (or “undocumented”) migration and increasing precarity of labour connected with restructuring and informalisation of economies and labour markets in the context of emerging multilateral frameworks for the global governance of migration. The project was premised on a view of migration as an increasingly important global phenomenon, but structured by particular regional economic asymmetries (Castles and Miller, 2009): processes that place post-Apartheid South Africa as an attractive economy and migration hub in the Southern African region, Turkey on the one hand towards the states of former Eastern block and on the other as a stop for migrants and refugees from the south often with plans for continuing their migration, and Sweden as a highly regulated welfare state and high immigration hub at the Northern post of European Union, close to the Baltic states and Poland – new member states of the European Union.
